Default Self Clean Door Will Not Lock
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GJP84800
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello,
attempted to start the self cleaning oven function but the locking latch just goes from lock to unlock constantly and makes a loud clicking sound. The oven display
"lock" on the console goes on and off as well. The latch is not being obstructed.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking it may be a solenoid???

Thanks

Tried 2 different sites could not find any info on this Model Number.
Are you sure it is correct?

From your description it sounds like the latch motor OR solenoid is working.
Try pulling the door open, is it locking and unlocking.
If it is there is a good chance that the latch sensing switch is either no good or is not getting actuated.
So the stove continually tries to lock the door.

Denman, thanks for your reply.

Yes the model number is correct but it is Canadian.

I did find this site http://partsfiles.tap.net/Cooking/GJP84800.pdf that may help. Would it be the switch interlock part # 27 that would be the sensing switch.

Yes the door is locking and unlocking.

Thanks

Yes that is the one I would check.
Could be it is no good or could be it just needs some adjustment.

Well I finally fixed this with the help of philnoel4051. His instructions to me are as follows:

When the solenoid engages it lifts a litle bar which "clicks" two micro switches. (@ Rear center of oven.) In this case the bar was simply not lifting up high enough to actuate the micro switches. I wound up just loosening the screws which hold the switches in place and moving them slightly so that when the door locks, the switches are actuated and confirm to the control board that the door is locked. Hence, no more lock/unlock/lock/unlock...

It was a very easy fix, I ended up taking out the switch and bending the metal bar slightly so that the micro switches would actuate. I suppose the more expensive fix would be to replace the switches but for now this seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks Phil and those that replied. I hope this information assists others with the same problem.
