Unhappy RV oven not coming up to temp
Brand: Magic Chef
Model Number: BT16LA-4Z
Age: More than 10 years

Hi,

First, this is an RV, propane range - no electrical involved.

I've already replaced the saftey valve, and I have no problem lighting the pilot light or with it staying lit. However, when I turn the tempature dial up, the pilot does not increase in size until I reach nearly the 350 degree mark and it only heats to 175-200. When I turn it all the way up to broil, I only reach 225-250 after 15 mintues.

I believe the problem is with the thermostat/tempature valve. Yes/No? If so, is this an adjustable part on this model oven? Or is it simply a replacement part? Or does anyone have other thoughts?

Thanks a bunch!
Dave

Needs Thermostat. Not Safety.

Thanks! Actually I found the answer!

There is an adjustment inside the tempature knob itself.

I think the clue here was that the pilot light did not grow in size to trip the saftey until the temperature knob was turned up to around 350.

Removing the temperature knob reveals a screw deep inside the throat of the valve stem. Turning this screw adjusted both the pilot activation level as well as temperature level.

I set the screw to where the pilot doubled at the lowest tempature on the the plastic knob (170). I then let the oven run for 15 minutes or so (set to 400) and it came up to 400.

One thing to note is that I could not get a high temp reading WITHOUT having the center pan/heatspreader/rack installed. With the thermometer on the bottom of the over the temperature remained just below 200. After replacing the center level pans and rack and placing the thermometer on top of the center rack, it read 400!

Problem solved!
