Default Romove the Whirlpool Cooktop
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GL8856EB
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello folks,
My cooktop spark module is not working so I need to replace it. I already found the part on Partselect so the only thing I have to do is to remove the cooktop and replace the spark module. By looking at the diagram, I can see that the spark module is at the front right hand.

I appreciate any hints on how to remove the cooktop? Also I see that the gasket is under the fiberglass is damaged, can someone point me to the replacement part?
Here is the picture of the cooktop.

you will have to turn off the gas supply and disconnect the gas hose going to the unit. Remove the unit from the countertop and remove the screws holding the base to the top cooktop. This will give you access to the inside of the cooktop.

Thanks petepambis for your quick response. But I still can't see how I can disconnect the gas hose going to the unit unless I remove the cooktop first??? Do you mean that I have to remove the oven beneath it??

If there is an oven installed underneath the cooktop, then you will have to remove it first to get to the gas line underneath the cooktop. There should be a gas shut off valve located at the cooktop. Make sure to turn it off, then remove the gas hose and you will now be able to remove the cooktop. I know it is a little bit of a pain, but it is the only way to do it.

Hi petepambis, I followed your instruction and now I could lift up the cooktop from the cabenet cut out. However, the spark unit is inside the burnerbox. How do I gain access to the spark unit inside the burnerbox. I think that is the last I have to do to get to the part I need to replace. Thanks so much for helping.

once you have removed the cooktop from the countertop and disconnected the gas hose, find a work area with lots of ample room to work on the unit. Underneath the cooktop, you will find several screws that hold the top to the base. Remove the screws and this will allow the top half of the cooktop to be release from the base.
