Question Replacing burners?
Brand: General Electric

1. My question is; could someone explain to me the safe, proper procedure for replacing the burners on this thing? There are 3 6" burners and one large one. The large one seems easy enough to remove, but the other 3 seem 'stuck' when I try to get them out. Are they just baked in there, or...? It's an old range...bought used; at least six or seven years old before it came to my house.

2. Precursor to #2, actually. Besides simply ceasing to function, how does one tell when your burners are going 'bad'? Mine may not need replacing at all - it's a debate in my household at the moment. Heh.

Thanks in advance!

HG

Hi!

I'm assuming it's a gas range. Why do you think that your burners have gone bad? Does it still light? Are there less flames? I have encountered problems with gas ranges where it's the pipes and tubes leading to the burners that were obstructed with cobwebs and debris.

Ooops... *blush* I guess I should have said 'elements'. It's an electric range.

One of the elements in the back seems to not be heating up all the way. Another one is chipped.

I am not convinced that they really need replacing - of course, I'm a tightwad, and as long as I have one element that'll cook fried green tomatoes, I'm a happy girl.

;D

Our range have corroded heating elements too but they work just fine. In it's simplest term, a heating element or plate is just a coil of metal to which + and - electrodes are attached so they seldom go bad. How about the supply of electricity to the plate???

This is not your case, I know but for others, be careful about just yanking and pulling out the big burner.

I have a really old Admiral electric stove and the 3 small burners come out for cleaning and replacing but for some reason the large one is hard wired. It cannot come out like the others. It is actually attached.

It comes out enough for cleaning but I would assume if it no longer heated, I would need to turn off the electricity to fix it.

Well you know, there doesn't APPEAR to be anything wrong with the prong-and-plug connection of the element to its seat; but I suppose it's *possible* that there is some trouble there. Maybe some kind of extra corroded material has gotten down in there...and that's one of the reasons they feel like they're stuck...?
