Default Oven won't turn off
Brand: Magic Chef
Model Number: Concept Series
Age: More than 10 years

Used oven today and when went to turn it off the knob stopped at just under 200 degrees. It won't go back to off. Slight pressure does nothing--don't want to force it and break it.

Why is this happening? This is a built in oven which we have used for more than 13 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Is there some turn off switch in the oven itself than I could get to to shut the oven down?

What is causing this knob to be stuck?

I have shined a flashlight inside both the upper and lower oven and do not see any numbers anywhere. This is a gas built-in model from about 1974 or so.

Sorry I couldn't supply any more information.

The knob will move to higher than ~185 degrees, but will not turn any further toward the off line.

I would like to open up the control panel as there are 2 screws holding that but need to know

1) if that is a good idea
2) if it is, what to watch out for

Thanks,
Cathy S.

Check and see if the knob is broken.

Remove the knob and turn the shaft by hand.

If this does not work you should call in a qualified gas technician.

Found the shut off valve that looks as if has been painted green.

A neighbor told me that green shut off valves are not good any longer and freeze open. Is this true?

We have decided to replace the oven, but due to the shut off valve not working, have turned off gas to entire home. Is it still possible to get this valve to shut off until we get a new oven? (Sure would like to have the rest of the house functioning again.)

Thank you---any suggestion would be appreciated.

Cathy S.
