Question Oven will not shut off.
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: SF325LEKQ0
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a Whirlpool Gas Range converted for propane. The correct conversion kit was installed. The Gas Range is between 4-5 years old.

Well, my wife was cooking and noticed when she finished that the oven part of the stove would not shut off. I tried to unplug the stove, since it has an electronic valve assembly and the stove continued to stay on. I turned off the supply of propane and only then did it shut off (obviously). With the stove still unplugged I turned back on the supply of propane and could hear the propane coming out of the oven. So I immediately shut off the propane supply again and waited about 20 minutes. Tried the routine again and you could not hear the propane coming out. I then plugged the stove back in and tried to turn on the stove at the bake cycle. The oven came on but would not shut off again.

Is the Electronic Valve assembly at fault? When I remove the electronic contacts from the Valve assembly I read 0 ohms across it. What is normal? Without a load I cannot read any current across this part. Is this correct? This is Whirlpool part# 98011275.

A little history...When we first got the stove, we noticed a loud metal "bang" during preheat coming from inside the oven. This only happens once during preheat. This has been going on ever since. Is this normal? It's as if once the metal warms up, it expands outwards causing the "bang" noise. It sounds like the noise you would make if you bent some metal inwards and then tried to push it back out from the inside to its normal position. Could this be part of the cause of the stove not turning off.

No the banging noise that you hear when the range first heats up is just what you said the expansion of the oven liner and it is called oil canning.

The fuel valve is faulty and should be replaced but it should be done by a qualified gas technician so he can check the rest of the range.

Here is a link to your range model SF325LEKQ0.

Talking Too late...

I already replaced the electronic fuel valve myself before reading the reply. I am an electronic tech....does that make me qualified.

Anyways...after replacing the electronic fuel valve and checking for gas leaks with a detector solution the stove turns on and off just beautifully now.

Thanks for your help.

One question though...How does one fix "oil canning" or is it just something I have to live with?

For the oil canning issue call Whirlpool and see if there is a kit available for this.

Here is the number for Whirlpool US 1-866-698-2538 Canada 1-800-807-6777.

Thanks Sheila! Good idea. By the way, my wife feels better knowing that the noise does not mean the oven is going to blow up.
