I turn the oven on and see the element glowing orange but the overn will not light. It seems like I can smell a little gas but not overwelming. The oven is 18 years old. Could the ignitor element not be hot enough to turn the gas valve on and need replacement? Perhaps thermostat? Any other suggestions? I really don't want to just start throwing all kinds of parts at it giving the cost of parts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You should have a qualified gas technician look at the range.
