Exclamation Oven very slow to preheat
Brand: Magic Chef
Model Number: 5892VVA
Age: More than 10 years

Baking element burned out and was replaced. Now, oven takes 30 minutes to preheat and doesn't seem to stay as hot as it should. Had to leave cookies in an extra 2 minutes. Any ideas?

Are you sure the replacement element was the same as the original

Also check your oven thermostat to ensure it was not bent during installation of the element

Repairman today said had to be control panel -- probably shorted out when element blew. Waiting for a price quote. Will probably be buying a new stove! :-(

New control board is $195 + tax & labor! Plus, I've already spent $40 for a new baking element. Could there be an easier, cheaper fix for the problem? If not, is a 13-year-old range worth spending $300+ on? Thanks much for any help!

How did the the repairman decide that it was the control board?
Did he actually come out and look at the stove?
Did you check the thermostat as I suggested earlier?
How was the element replaced and who replaced it?
Were the screws removed, the element pulled forward and new element replaced in the oven OR was the back removed to replace it?
Were the contacts on the element wires cleaned before reconnecting them?

I would unplug the stove, pull it forward remove the back and check for any signs of overheating or anything that just looks unusual. Things like insulation moved Disconnect the thermostat and check the connectors for corrosion (often a brown coating on the pins).

Is it worth throwing $300.00 at this stove is totally up to you.
1. How much is a new one going to cost. If you can get a new one for $700.00 of equal quality then I would not do it.
2. Is color matching an issue
3. What kind of shape is the stove in
4. How happy are you with the stove
5. It is 13 years old so getting some parts for it is going to be an issue in the not too distant future

I would not recommend a unit with a board that controls all stove and oven elements. Just look at this forum and see how many people are having board problems. Standard controls are still best for stove top elements. Plus the more stuff on the control board the more expensive the board is to replace, and the more things that can go wrong with it. Make sure it has a good standard warranty. I do not buy extended warranties but I have never had an appliance repairman in my house. Just my opinion.

The technician said the board is all it could be. Yes, he came out and looked at it. Thermostat was OK. My husband replaced the element. He pulled it forward as you said, and yes, cleaned and tightened the connectors. The tech said the element was OK.

A new range with the same features as mine is $1500-$1700. And, yes I'm anal about things matching. Call it a female thing! The range is in excellent shape, and I love it. We decided to go ahead and have them replace the board. (Merry Christmas to me! HA!) The applicance store guarantees the fix, or we don't have to pay. Probably doesn't get any better than that.

I'll definitely remember your advice on not getting a control board the next time around! We bought all new applicances when we built the house 13 years ago. Had to replace the hot water heater and repair the fridge last year, replace the washer this spring, and now this . . . guess it's just normal upkeep.

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide all the info. I pray that you have a blessed Christmas!
