Default Oven shorting out?
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GMC305PDS6
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi,

We accidently used oven cleaner on our self-cleaning oven

The bottom element then started heating up by itself. The only way to stop it is by turning it off at the mains. It only gets up to about 150F. We had someone come out and tey said te cleaning product shorted out the burner element so the oven was now grounding through the element and the reason it was heating up was due to its resistance. They said to fix it we needed a new element. The part they said we needed is described as "SUB ELMNT - BA) at about $45.

I am assuming this is part PS1488536, ELMNT-BAKE.

Do you think thi ssounds correct? I assume the fix is as simple as replacing the element. Any advice?

Thanks,
Pete

I don't think that is what has cause your problem.

The element in a self clean oven is no different then one in a none self clean model.

If that was the case this would happen to every oven that oven cleaner was use on.

It could be a problem with the control.

Here is a link to your oven model GMC305PDS6.
