Unhappy Oven overheated
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: RF365PXYW 2
Age: 5 - 10 years

This sounds crazy, but last week while baking dinner (approx 30 minutes) I noticed a funky smell, like when an oven is being cleaned. About 5 minutes later I heard a crakeling coming from the oven. It was my glass dish in the oven. My first reaction was to pull the dish out. The dish was so hot it was no longer clear but whitish and the heat burned slits in my new oven mits. I quickly turned the oven off. It cooled down, but left the usual white residue on the side walls as if it had self cleaned. Is it possible for the oven to self clean if the knob on top is set to clean but the lock is not pulled into place? I believe I had it on bake? Today I tested the oven on 150 then on 250. Both times the bake element heated it up and then the oven controlled the temp just fine. Am I going nuts?

Not if everything is working correctly.

Taking a quick look at the Diagram I see that stove has the two bake/broil relays on the back of the oven.

Chances are that the bake relay got stuck and the oven over heated.
