Default Oven lock grinding, no heat
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: JKP45
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi,

My double GE stove, Serial# TF 686980Q, purchased from Lowes, had a problem about a year ago where it would randomly start beeping with an error code (I think it was F2, I can't remember) while not being used. The only way to stop the beeping was to flip our breaker switch. When the top oven was in use the control panel would steam up.

A tech came out and could not find the cause. The oven wasn't having the beeping problem at the time.

I discovered that we could prevent the error by only using the top oven for dry baking and not using the timer.

Last Wednesday, the lock started grinding off and on about every 45 seconds while the oven is not in use. We cleaned the oven successfully, thinking that perhaps we had initiated the clean setting accidentally. Afterwards the oven still has the grinding lock problem. When I try to turn the oven on bake, it acts normally for a few moments, I hear the lock initiate, the temperature panel goes off and the control panel shows the oven a locked, which it is, and the oven is off.

I noticed a web page here: http://www.lieffcabraser.com/profileovencomplaints.htm

Do you know if there are any recalls for this model? I couldn't find anything, but I thought you might know. I really don't want to buy expensive repair parts if the oven has a design flaw. It seemed like the steam build up behind the panel could cause a short.

From the description, can you tell what part needs replacing?

Thank you,

Margaret

It s sound like one of the switch in the door lock may be faulty.

To my knowledge there is no flaws in your range.

Turn the power off to the oven and disconnect the wire to the locking motor.

Turn the power back on a see if the oven will work.

If the oven works replace the lock assembly.

Here is a breakdown of your oven model JKP45.

To order part you will need the last 5 digit of your model number.

Hi Sheila,

Thank you for getting back with me so quickly.

I disconnected the upper oven lock's power supply, and although it (obviously) stopped the upper oven lock from constantly grinding open and closed, the oven, upper and lower, still turns off after a few seconds when on the bake setting. However the oven clean setting does work, so it is not the heating element.

The complete model number is: JKP45WOP1WG, Serial: TF6869800

Any other ideas about what could be the problem?

Thank you,

Margaret

Is sounds like the problem is in the control.

Will the ovens work on the broil setting?

Here is a link to your oven model JKP45WP1

Hi,

The top oven control stayed on broil for a few moments and then turned off, no heat. The lower oven control stayed on until I turned it off, but still no heat.

Is the control hard to install?

Thank you,

Margaret

The control is not hard at all to replace.
