Default Oven fire
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: 1 - 4 years

After baking a spinach pie, grease fell to the bottom of the stove. This created a slimy film in the bottom of the oven. Today a started the self clean and after about 15 minutes I noticed low flames in the bottom of the oven. I stopped the cleaning process out of fear. Are these flames part of the process of oven cleaning or was i about to have an inferno?

No it is not part of a normal self clean process

Get a wooden or plastic spatula scrape up as much of the gunk as you can
Wash the area with soap and water then try self clean again
