The middle layer of glass in the door of my oven shattered into many tiny pieces half way through the self cleaning cycle. The range was purchased in Sept. 2002. If I had not been here to shut the oven off, who knows what would have happened. Is it safe to replace the glass? What might cause this to happen?

There may have been a hair line crack in the glass and over time the glass got weaker and the high heat made it finally break.

Yes it safe to replace the glass.
