Default Oven damage and repairs
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: jkp56wowlww
Age: 5 - 10 years

I set my oven for cleaning and 2 hours into it I noticed light flashing from the oven and upon checking, the bake element looked like a welder at work. Immediately I turned off the oven but the arcing continued for several minutes before it stopped. When it cooled I opened the door and found the bake element completely burned off on the right side. Is this something that could have caused a fire if I did not notice it?
Is it OK to continue to use the broiler and or the lower oven?

Also can I change the element myself if I order it from you? I have done many many projects around the house and am very handy.
thank you,
Joseph Provetto, rojopro@yahoo.com

No this would not have caused a fire.

This happens to a lot of element.

You can use the lower oven but I would not use the top one until you replace the bake element.

You should be able to replace the element yourself.

There are to screws that hold it in please at the back of the oven and two wire on the ends of the element when you pull it out.

Here is a link to your ovens model jkp56ww1ww.

Here is the bake element for your oven.

These elements draw a LOT of current while blowing out. When you replace the element, run the oven in bake and make sure it has no welded contacts on the relay board. Welded contacts will keep the stove well above the temperature selected!!
