Default One Burner doesn't work, electric range
Brand: General Electric
Age: Less than 1 year

Hi, a generic question about how to test an electric range heat coil once it is removed. It is an old GE range that is in a rental unit. It is a six inch three wire part. I have checked with an ohm meter from the common power black terminal to each of the ground legs and I have continuity. Is this the end of the test? It is an old pushbutton unit , can I check the switch? Would the parts even be available if it is a switch?

Dan, that is ancient, not old. Is the switches seperate from the stove? Cut the power of, and take the wires off the burner, and see if you are getting continuity, when you turn on the switch to ask for heat. If you need me you can reach me at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Tom it is possible that the unit is original from new construction in 1975. The way I checked the burner itself is that correct? Is the burner not a suspect? The group of switches are on the raised panel just behind all the burners against the wall. One switch for each burner. I only looked at it briefly yesterday as I just bought the condo. I'd say each switch had 6 push buttons or more. Anyway with power off I should hook an ohm meter from common power to each ground leg at a time and check for continuity as I operate the push buttons? Is that correct.
