Default new self cleaning ovens

My mother was telling me this evening she got a phone call from her best friend. She was pretty shook up. Apparently she has one of these self cleaning ovens. The kind that locks when cleaning and you can't open it until it is done.

Well somehow she left it on this morning to clean it and went out for the day. The neighborhood called the fire dept because her house was on fire. They claim it was because of the stove.

You for real? I mean, you telling us that your mom's home just went up in smoke? Self-cleaning ovens are supposed to burn everything inside at very high temperatures, that's why it locks itself. It's supposed to be a safety measure.

Self cleaning ovens are really safe to use.Did you waited atleast for an hour after the cycle is done? I guess that once the oven has cooled sufficiently, sure the oven will unlock by itself.

Yes I am serious. And what's even more bizarre, the insurance inspector came this morning to assess the damage to the living room and kitchen which are almost totally destroyed and he said that the friend will probably not be able to put in a claim. He said the offical cause of the fire was her neglect in leaving the oven on while she was not at home.

So I don't know any more than that yet. But I thought the same as everyone else that the lock was for safety. Plus I don't know what good it would be for her to be home??

I guess we will have more info later in the week. I was just curious what everyone else thought of these ovens.
