Unhappy Keypad or control panel on the fritz
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GY396LXPQ00
Age: 1 - 4 years

Intially I could not turn on/off the oven, the the clock stopped working on the keypad. Now, I cannot control any of the functions on the keypad. Would I need a new keypad? Board? Or both?

Big mahalo (thank you) for any advice.

First thing to do is check the connection between the key pad and the control.

Sometimes the connection get loose.

If there is no ribbon cable between them it will be the control assembly that you will need.

Here is a link to your range model GY396LXPQ00.

Default Keypad or control on the fritz

Thanks for the advice. It does have a ribbon connection.
Anyway I can test the control without the keypad?

Sheila,
I promise this is the last question - can the ribbon connection be repaired?
There are a few small visible breaks in the grey threads.

thanks
joan

Yes ribbon cables can be repaired but it is a delicate job
I would check the conductors with a ohm meter first just to be sure they are broken
Then if the cable is hard wired onto the control panel you have nothing to loose giving repair a try
Extreme care must be taken so that you do not short the conductors to each other
You may blow the control board if you make a mistake
If you have a friend who is an electronics hobbyist, they could probably do it
Taking it to an electronics shop could end up costing as much as a new part

Method 1:
Need a low wattage pencil soldering iron
Solder in external wires from connector to connector
Bypassing the ribbon connector

Method 2:
Scrape off the plastic coating on one side of the cable to get down to the copper conductors. Small exacto knife or a scalpel works well
Then bridge the gaps with either
A. solder/wire (need a very delicate touch because you do not want to melt the surrounding plastic)
B. or conductive epoxy. This is available at electronics stores. Could also use the stuff they use to repair rear window defrosters. Check the lines with a meter to make sure the fix worked, then tape over the repair heavy enough so the cable cannot bend at the fix location

Denman, thanks a bunch for the suggestions. I'll try anything at this point. The part is on backorder. Ugh. Big mahalo for the help.
