Default Kenmore Electric Oven not working
Brand: Please select
Model Number: 790.92682302
Age: 1 - 4 years

I was preheating my Kenmore oven and right when it hit the desired temperature - there was a flash that came from behind the oven. At the same time all the power to the house switched off. I found that the main 100amp fuse was tripped as well as the 40amp fuse for the oven.

When I got everything back on, I noticed the oven does not heat any more - both elements are cold. In my troubleshooting, I found that the elements seemed to be fine - they test out with an ohm meter. I check behind the covers in the back and everything looks fine - no burnt marks or anything. I measured the voltage where the 3 wires are connected in the back and it shows 247v - can that be right? I checked all the wires and there is no obvious short.

The display works and the stove top works fine - just not the oven even though the light indicator says it on. The other thing I noticed is that unit makes a quick buzz sound right when I plugged it into the wall outlet - not sure if that's new or not.

Is it my Electronic Oven Control or my high voltage readings?

Thanks in advance...

The voltage the you are getting 247 volts is good, that is what you should have.

Something had to have short to take out both fuse.

Did you check the relays on the clock.

Here is a link to the parts of your range model 790.92682302.

Thanks for the reply...

Are you referring to the black, box-like devices on the right side of the following picture:

If so...how do you test them? Are these parts replaceable? Probably have to buy the whole clock/timer unit...right? I really thought it would be easy to spot the short once I took off the back covers.

Yes the relays are the black boxes on the right side of the clock.

Check to see if you have 240v at the clock terminals marked L1 and L2 in.

If that is good check to see if you have 240 volts between L2 out and Bake and then check between L2 and BRL.

If there is 240 volt going in and nothing come out you will have to replace the clock.

You would think that if it took our the main house fuse that you would see some kind of damage.

There is a diode and a resister on the board that have what looks like smoke marks on them but it is hard to tell.

Thanks Sheila, I will test them out and see what I get. You're right, that diode and a resister do look like they could be burnt.

I have the same Kenmore range purchased in Feb. 2004. Both oven and broiler stopped working last Saturday. The is 240- volt going into the controller but nothing coming out. I guess I need a new controller.
My old electric range without those fancy electronic controls lasted almost 20 years.

Interesting....I bought mine May 1st, 2004. I did test the relays and I have +220v going in and nothing coming out....so I ordered the clock/timer part. Hopefully this one will last longer.

Update: I replaced the clock/timer and the oven is working again! I ended up taking the old clock/timer apart which clearly shows where the short was:

Thanks for the help Shelia...
