Default Jennair cooktop too hot
Brand: Jenn-Air
Model Number: JES9800

All 4 burners on my Jennair JES9800 range are way too hot. I can boil water on low! Any suggestions? Can they be adjusted?

No, If is all electric, that would be the switches. If it is gas, then each burner can be adjusted. If you need me you can reach me at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Is it gas or electric?

Is this something that has changed over time or has it always been too hot?

Hi KrisB

I have the same problem with my JES9800A. It's 6 years old, and has been that way since day 1. The 6" burners are excellent. The dual 5/9" burners are extremely hot on "lo", and can incernerate the gates of Hell on "Hi". When I sear steaks, I do it on lo, and turn the knob on lo for 2 minutes, and turn it off for 1 minute. French toast is 1 minute on, 1 minute off. Makes cooking a joy, I tell you.

I e-mailed Jenn-Air to see if there is a fix for this. No response. So I called them, and was told that this is absolutely not normal, and they scheduled a technician to come out. 2 days later, they responded to my e-mail, saying they apologized for the inconvenience of burning all my food, but they had looked in the litterature for this model, and it's operating perfectly - no need for service. If Jenn-Air intentionally designs ranges to operate this way, they might be in the wrong business. Maybe someone should cook on it before they market it?

I had the tech come out anyway, in case he had some tricks up his sleeve. He said the parts list said to replace the original switch with a new part number, though he couldn't guarantee that the extreme heat was the reason for the new part number. Because my alternative option is to rip the whole range out, I'm having him go ahead and replace the switches in a couple of days. I'll let you know if it helps. I've looked at the new switch, and it seems to have an adjustment screw that adjusts the distance between the bimetal switch, which would certainly allow for some temp control adjustment. We'll see, we'll see. Please let me know if you come across any other way to fix yours.

Default It worked!

The fix-all-appliances technician was here today and replaced my dual burner switches. Voila! They work perfectly now. The new switches were quite different from the old ones. Anyway, I can now place my hand on the burner on the lo setting, and bring pots to a rapid boil on Hi, so I'm a very happy camper right now.

I'm quite annoyed that Jenn Air customer service did not let me know about this fix when I asked them if there was any way to bring down the astonishing temps on these two burners.

Tired of blackened food?
Sorry I don't have the part number for the new switch. I can't find the receipt.
The tech and I decided that only the switch could be the problem. When he looked up the replacement part number for my 6-year-old stove, his computer stated: "do not use original part number xxxx. Replace with part number yyyyy." The new switches looked very different from the original ones, in fact the tech had some difficulties figuring out how to connect them. He made no adjustments or anything. Connected them as-is from the factory, and I have a brand new stove. Lo is cool enough to melt chocolate and slow-simmer, and hot does a rapid boil, and 4 a perfect french toast. You should be able to have someone look up the replacement part number for your switches, and if they're different from your original ones, I say rip-em-out!

Thanks for your quick reply. I have the part (#12002125) but is completely different than old part. If you remember the Tech you spoke with, would be a great help. Thanks, Ken

That's probably a very good sign that your new switches are different that the old "burn-en-up" switches!
I'm sorry, I don't have any of the paperwork anymore. All I remember is that is was A&E Factory Service. They're nationwide, and based in Houston. There should be a 1-800 number online. The tech who installed mine was in the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA office. The A&E techs use a portable laptop system with all the factory manuals on it, so all of them across the nation should have the same information. The wiring on the new switch was so different from the original that he had to call another tech and between them they were able to figure it out. Sorry I don't have the details anymore. Good luck! You'll love you're stove when this gets fixed.
