Default Help with changing oven element
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: YGY396LXGQ
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hello folks,

The largest element on our smooth-top ceramic oven needs replacing (at least I hope that's the problem!) I was wondering if anyone could tell me (or direct me to the best spot for this info) how the top of the oven is lifted. I see a few screws near the front...is that all? Does the entire top come off, or are their hinges of some sort. Is the element easy to replace once the top is lifted?

Thanks! Any insight would be appreciated!

Can you please verify your model number as I can not locate it in our database.

Hello!

That's a great question. On the supporting documentation that came with the oven, the model # is YGY396LX. When the oven was serviced a few years ago (for an unrelated item), the invoice has the model # listed as YGY396LXGQ6. The number I gave you in the original message was one my wife wrote down (although she has since forgotten where she got it!) Not sure if this means anything but the oven was bought in Canada. Hope this helps! Thanks for looking into this for me!

I would seriously doubt that the element is bad. 99% of the time it is the switch. Kill the power to the oven, and take off the back panel, and see if there is a burn't wire. If not replace the switch. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Smile Turns out it WAS the element

Well, finally got around to looking at the stove and it turns out it was, in fact, the element, and not the switch. After examining the old element, I could see the small break. This made sense because just before the element went, we could see a glowing bright spot when the element was on. It wasn't too long after when it ceased to function. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
