Default GE oven preheats, but won't hold temp
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: jgbp30wek1ww
Age: 1 - 4 years

Maybe someone can help me diagnose this problem. My gas range is just over a year old and out of warranty. I have converted it to propane. The problem is that the oven fires up, preheats and lets me know when it is preheated. Then obviously beacuse it is preheated, it shuts off, but then does not fire back up to maintain its temperature. I am pretty handy and repair washers and dryers for a living, but need assistance diagnosing the problem here. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Check to see if the igniter is glowing.

If the igniter is glowing give it a tap and see if the valve open and the burner ignites.

If the burner ignites you have a weak igniter and it will have to be replaced.

Here is a link to your range model jgbp30wek1ww.

Thanks Sheila. I went through the schematic because the oven always fires up for the preheat, but i think that the in oven thermostat is causing the oven to shut off prematurely. It beeps to let me know it is preheated, then it shuts off. If i open the door to let some heat out to enduce it to kick on again, i hear the click in the board area, then the ignitor comes on. Now that the ignitor is on, it is putting of 1800-2400 degrees F. The heat from the ignitor is causing the thermostat to tell the board to shut off again, even though it is still not at the desired temp. I followed the two purple wires to the board and set my sperry meter to 200k OHMS. The only way to get a reading at all it to put the red on one wire and the black on the other wire. This gives me a reading of 1.1 on the meter. It goes as high as 37 or so initially, then quickly works back down to 1.1 every time. Does this mean that the thermostat is bad? I just don't want to pay for a service call or spend a ton of money on senseless parts. Thanks you.

The igniter would not put off that much heat.

To check the oven sensor remove it form the oven and check the resistance.

You should get a reading of 1100 ohm at room temperature.

The resistance goes up as the temperature goes up.
