Default GE JBP48WB4WW Range - Infinite Switch Keeps Shorting Out
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: JBP48WB4WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Having a recurring problem on my GE range that I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. The problem started last year. I was getting a crackling/sparking type sound from behing the knob for the front left burner (small burner) when it was on. It would happen maybe 1-2 times each minute and last just for a second. After taking the panel off and examining the switch, I noticed it was black around some areas...clearly an indication that it had indeed been sparking.

So I changed the switch with the same exact part number that was stamped on the orginal (WB24T10029). This seemed to solve the problem for about a month...but then the exact same symptoms returned.

All the wiring from the switch to the burner looks to be in good shape.
Did I just get unlucky and receive another bad switch?
Could a problem with the burner itself be causing the switch to short like that?

Any ideas and/or troubleshooting suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Check the inside of the element terminal block.

Make sure that you unplug the range first.

Inspected the tip of the element for arcing.

If the element and terminal block are damage that could be the cause, if not you just got lucky.

Here is a link to your range model number JBP48WB4WW.
