Default GE Cooktop 2 Burners come on at once
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: JP340
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a ge electric radiant cooktop that heats multiple burners with only one burner selected. It is a four burner cooktop two 1200w burners and two 1900w burners. On both 1200w element controls when selected on, it heats it's respective 1200w element and the front right 1900w element. The element controls for the 1900w burners do not activate any burners. The back left 1900w element does not come on. I took the cooktop out and removed the glass top. It appears that I have no melted wires. A couple of the element controls look like they have been hot, possible arching indications from the inside. The element controls look like they are interconnected for power. I suspect it is the element controls that have gone bad, has anyone else had this problem and what did you do? I have ordered 4 new element controls; but I wanted to confirm my suspisions before I install them.

It does sound like you have some bad controls.

There are two different control that must match the element. The switch are have different wattages that match the elements.

When you ordered your switch you should have order two 1200 watt and two 1900 watt switches.

You should check the left back burn with a meter to make sure that the element is good.

Here is a link to your cook top model JP340.

For a detail parts list for your model you will need the last five digit of your model number.

Thank you. I did order two 1200w controls and two 1900w controls. You suggested checking the back left element with a meter, how do I do that?
Thanks again for your help.

You will need an ohm meter to check the resistance of the coils.

If the coil is open that you will not get a reading.

There is also a thermal switch on the element that would have to be checked.

You will have the follow the wiring diagram to check this.
