after using the broiler/oven gas would not turn off. Repeated attemps failed, shut off dial seems fine - however, turning it made no difference. What could be wrong?

Had to pull the stove out and turn off the valve to shut it off.

If you could stop it by unpluggin the unit - it's the thermostat, otherwise it's the gas valve.
