Default F7 code GE built in convection oven
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: JT910WA2WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I get the F7 error code. I have a procedure that is supposed to indicate if the control (circuit board) is bad, or the key panel is bad. Instructions to make this determination state
1.Push CLEAR/OFF pad
2.Disconnect ribbon cable from control and wait at least 32 seconds to see if Code recurs.
*If code recurs, problem is in the control. Replace control
*If code does not recur problem is with the Key Panel

First these instructions are confusing. Here is what I did.
When the F7 appears on display push the Clear/off pad (at this point the F7 disappears from the display. Then I disconnect the ribbon cable for at least 32 seconds, then reinstall it. Without doing or touching anything else, the F7 code will reappear anywhere from a couple minutes later to several hours later.

Since the instructions did not indicate whether the re-occurance of the F7 code was supposed to be instantaneous after reattaching the ribbon cable, or if it could be several hours I concluded that the problem was with the control. I purchased a new control and installed properly and the problem is exactly the same as before I replaced the control.

Is my understanding of the instructions flawed? If it was the control being the problem would the F7 code have reappeared as soon as I plugged the ribbon cable back in? Does the diagnosis as described above indicate it is definately the control and the new unit I installed was also bad? Or am I misunderstanding the diagnosis and the problem is definitely the key panel?

I need HELP and I don't want to just keep buying parts unless I know exactly what the problem is. PS I know the new control was installed properly because I have replaced it once before several years ago and the replacement worked correctly.

What they meant is that if when you disconnect the key pad ribbon cable from the control and waited 32 seconds and the fault did not recur the control is good.

If the fault had recur without the key pad plugged in then it would have been the control that was faulty.

Here is a link to the parts of your oven model JT910WA2WW.

Thanks for your reply, I have learned from further research this is an inherent design flaw that is in most cases easily fixed without purchasing any spare parts.

If anyone has the F7 fault code and wants details respond and I will get an email notification. You should definitely try this before you buy any parts. If I had known this I wouldn't have wasted time and money replacing parts.
