Default Electric cooktop element wont heat - switch replacement
Brand: Jenn-Air
Model Number: JES9800AAW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi-

I have a Jenn-Air JES9800AAW electric slide in range. The RIGHT FRONT combination small/large element stopped heating. I suspect the switch since both the small and large parts stopped at the same time. The indicator light on the front panel does come on when I turn the knob, FWIW.

The serial number is 164xxxx6ZZ (I left out a few digits in the middle).
I believe this means it is a series 16.

I looked up the drawings on the site and ordered combo switch 12002125. Interestingly, this switch is made by Whirlpool, but the instructions are copyright by Maytag. The instruction sheet is 16023363.

I can't figure out the wiring. The old switch says TUDP411 in large letters and 209050/7403P406-60 in smaller letters.

The old switch had connections labelled 2,3,4,5,N.
From the wiring diagrams, I think
The black wires (2 of them) from 2 goes to the new P1 position
The peach wire from 3 goes to the new 4 position
The yellow wire from 4 goes to the new 4a
The single black wire from 5 goes to the new S2 position.

That leaves me with _three_ red wires, two of them are on one connector, and the other is by itself. The connector with two wires feeds from the RIGHT REAR switch.

Where do these red wires go? Should the connector with 2 red leads (one from RIGHT REAR) go to the new position P2? The other red lead to the new position 2?

Thanks

It sounds to me like you have the wrong switch. Does the original switch have a part # on it. If so, call part select, and ask them if the switch you have matches or changes to that part #. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

You have the right switch
The single red wire goes to 2 (element power feed)
The double red wire goes to P2 ( L2 line 2 power in)

Install Note * says 2 on the control goes to the element
P2 on the control goes to L2 supply

Here is a link to better copies of the wiring diagram so you can double check it

Default Thank You

Coincidently, I am doing this today also. You guys are awesome, I'm going to try it now.... But to be clear, it seems like I have to add a black jumper from the 16023363 kit that was not there before, and jumper from P1 to S1, correct? - and then the old #2 black wire also connects to a second P1 position.

This is fairly clear from the instruction sheet added to all you guys great dialog, but I wanted to make it perfectly clear before I power it up.

I'll go put the kids to sleep and see if I get a reply.

Perfect timing for me here, THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Mike

Default Done and done

Just to follow up. Everything works as it should after following the suggestions from the forum (well, except for the "you have the wrong switch" post).

Thanks to all.
