Unhappy Dual element burner won't do single
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GJP84900
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Ceran (glass) top Whirlpool stove that has just developed a problem. One of the burners is a dual element. The center is a small round element. The center element is surrounded by a larger round element. Normally, you can choose to use the small element alone, or both together.

Today I noticed that when I turn the knob any temperature range for the SINGLE burner, both burners come on (and your knuckles get very warm if you aren't paying attention!)

This stove is about 7 years old. It's a Whirlpool, model # GJP84900, type 30p.

I haven't dug into this issue yet, as I'm trying to get my turkey cooked.

Is this going to be an large or expensive repair, or something simple as replacing the control knob?

It is likely the switch that has failed.

Can you please check your model number as I can't locate it in our database?

It is located on a tag on the frame of the stove where the drawer closes.

The model number is definately correct. This is a Canadian model, if that makes a difference.

I've found another problem as well. The oven does not get up to temperature. I picked up an oven thermometer yesterday. I put it in the oven, turned the oven on and set the temp to 500 degrees F. After two hours the thermometer only read 245 degrees F.

No tripped breakers on the stove or in the basement.

Could there be a common ground problem between the oven and my burner, or is this just a coincidence?

Yes because your model is a Canadian model I will not be able to bring up a diagram.

A ground problem would effect the entire stove not just one surface element and the oven.

For the surface element it is likely the contacts in the switch are arced together.

For the oven check and make sure there is 240 volts at the element.

This is interesting, and I am glad to see some sort of information. I have the exact same problem on a GJP85800 (different color, same model I think).

This started with only the dual round burner merging (it actually stays completely on high no matter what the setting). Then the oven started to loose effective heating. It takes a very long time to preheat, and I usually opt to pre-heat with the broiler. Just this week the second dual burner on the right side is now coming on double instead of single.

Personally, I may opt to call Whirlpool on this one. If you can suggest an alternate repair resource, let me know. They charge about $80 just to look at the stove, and $60 per hour labor.

Thanks,
Fred

It is likely your switch.

This would be the dual switch part number 9753500.
