Default Door won't open on Tappan self cleaning oven
Brand: Tappan
Model Number: 31-1247
Age: More than 10 years

We have a Tappan self cleaning, electric stove/oven in one of our tenements. The tenant put chicken in the oven and engaged the lock lever. Now we can't open the door with the lever in the open position. The oven is cool. The lock won't release. I uncovered the linkage, and oiled it, thinking maybe something was stuck. No luck!! I don't want to set the stove on clean, since there is still a chicken inside. I'm afraid of a fire. Need help before the chicken starts to smell!! Thanks.

Is there a cancel button? If so, maybe start the self-cleaning mode and hit cancel quickly, hoping that will disengage the lock?

There is no cancel button on the oven. I just tried again, to see if I could get it to unlatch. I did the same things as I did yesterday, except this time I also released the arm that goes to the back. When I unscrewed the lever mechanism, it gave me more room to move, and it finally let go. Now they have their chicken back. Thanks.
