Default Cook Top Blows Breaker
Brand: Jenn-Air
Model Number: JEC8536ADN
Age: 1 - 4 years

My cook top just started blowing the 40 amp 240v breaker. You can not flip the breaker on at all. I've pulled the cook top and have it dismantled. I have access to a dvm. When I do a ohm test across the elements, they look ok. Does anyone know how to accuratly test the controls? The wiring diagram is available on the web site.
Its only 2 years old and I need to get it fixed before Easter or I am going to have to buy a new one. Please lend me a hand, thanks.

Have you disconnected the unit. Does the breaker still blow. Could be a bad breaker.

Since you have probably done the above and it sounds like the breaker blows with all elements OFF then you probably have a wire in the unit which is shorting to ground. Disconnect it, and check resistance from both sides of the line to neutral also between the 2 line in. Use the lowest ohms settings on the meter.
You will probably find a short between one side and neutral.

Check where the line comes into the cook-top. This is a common place where improper installation can cause overheating and/or wire problems.

I would connect my meter to the terminal block so I could monitor it.
If the short disappears when you move the unit the bad wire has just moved, you will still have to find it.
Check for melted wire insulation or telltale marks on the frame.
Move the different wires till you see the short disappear.
Start disconnecting things to find the culprit.
PS Make sure to either mark the wires or make yourself a diagram so you remember where the wires go
