Chipped Glass Cooktop

I dropped a glass jar on the edge of the cooktop and it chipped a piece off of it. The glass appears to be crumbling around the chip. Is there any way I can stop the progression of damage. I really don't want to have to replace the top (purchased in 10/2006).

The only way to repair the damage is to replace the top.
