Default Ceramic top range
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MER5752BAQ
Age: Less than 1 year

90 yr old Dad put tea kettle on and forgot. It boiled dry and stuck to ceramic top. He pulled it off and a small piece of glass came with it. Appears to be about 1/16th inch deep. Doesn't appear to go all the way through the glass. Is the burner safe to use as is or must the top be replaced?

I would replace the glass, and the 90 year old dad. Just kidding. No If the break is on that burner I would replace the glass, or not use that burner. Did you try to call your local Maytag Authorized repairman. He might have a heart and warranty it, seeing that it is under a year old. If you need me you can reach me at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

I've been using one with a cracked top for years. The crack goes through the middle of the big eye. I did have to replace the heating coil once because of stuff dripping through the crack hitting the element. But with the glass costing close to what a new one cost I'll just replace elements. With yours not even going all the way through I don't think you'll have a problem.

The key words in Woodchuck's reply is " I DON'T THINK" Which is not a total positive. It is like a weather man saying there is a "chance of rain". I did not see in WoodChuck"s reply that the glass could explode while you are cooking on it. So I go back to my reply. Contact your local Maytag authorized servicer, and see if he has a heart, and will warranty it. For your saftey, and you 90 year old father don't use that burner. WoodChuck, that is a positive.
