Question Burnt Smell
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: JBP90WS1
Age: More than 10 years

When using the oven there is a burnt smell similar to a burnt transformer or wire. However when examining wires and other parts nothing is brown or burnt. The odor also seems to be coming from the front top burner so this was replaced. Odor still is present.
Can this be coming from the vent? Is there a fan in the small vent that can be going that may present this symptom?

There is nothing in the vent that would cause the smell.

There is one transformer on your range but it is for the fluoresent light in the control panel so it should not be causing the odor when using the oven.

Here is a breakdown of your range model JBP90WS1.

Default Still looking

We are narrowing down the area where or when the odor occurs. It seems it starts when convection bake is used. When the range is first turned on for broilinig, baking, or if any of the top burners are turned on there is no odor.

looking at the parts diagrams it seems there is a balast in the rear right side. Will look to see if it is anything like a light balast and if it is leaking.

Question Removed Balast

I removed the balast (item 291 in the diagram) which is wired to the surface light and it does appear to have black goo visible near the windings. This could be residual insulation that was present when it was made. There is a slight burnt odor. Using a ohm meter I measure 26 ohms between the terminals. Is there any way of testing this further?

The other transformer (item 37 in the diagram) appears to be ok. It transforms voltage from 220 to 110 and 28 volts acording to the label on it.

Without the wiring diagram it is hard to say.

Red face Found source of burnt smell!

I had to bit the bullet and call in a repair service to diagnose the problem. It turned out to be the oven switch. Even though the switch still worked it was almost burned through. The plastic body was slowly burning thus the odor. I ordered one from Pats Select so all should be OK once it is installed.

Default Door Switch Ckt Question??

Is the door switch tied into the convection bake circuit? When I removed the almost destroyed door switch, (source of burnt smell) the convection bake and fan does not operate. The oven will come on and operate in bake.

There must be some other function for the door switch than just turning the light on and off since there are 3 wires in the circuit. Any wiring diagrams available anywhere???

The wiring diagram should have been on the range.

If it is missing the only thing you can do is call GE and see if they can send you one.

Here is a phone number for General Electric
