Default Burner no lying flat
Brand: Hotpoint
Model Number: RB734J
Age: More than 10 years

When we last cleaned the top of our electric range, the three smaller burners (not plug-ins) all laid down flat, but our large burner seems stuck in the upright position (about 10 degrees), in spite of keeping a heavy pot on it. Any suggestions?

There is a little hook piece that goes into the ring to keep the element flat.

If this is bent or broke off the element will not set flat.

This is a common thing that happens to the older style of wired in elements.

That type of element is no longer manufactured so it would have to be replace with the newer style that comes with a terminal block.
