We have learned that the built-in self clean oven in our recently purchased home was installed in 1980, but we have no history of how often the "self-cleaning" was done by the previous owner. The oven definitely needs a cleaning. Should we have an appliance service technician come and take a look at the oven or should we just attempt to follow the self-clean instructions and hope for the best?

Also, what is the typical service life for one of these ovens?

It is worth a try to see if the self-clean works before calling for service.

It is hard to say the life expectancy of any appliance but twenty years is a good time frame.
