Default Bottom element will not reheat after reaching temperature
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GRSP-2650SM-1
Age: 5 - 10 years

When operating the oven the bottom element on the oven will come on to bring the oven up to the set temperature, but once the temperature is reached the bottom element goes out and does not come back on. That is unless we turn the oven switch off and on.....then it heats up again.

This happened all of a sudden and we noticed it when the oven wasn't climbing above 250 although the temperature was set to 425. We place a thermometer in the oven and it registered 250. Also when we turned the oven temperature control back to 250 the indicator light went off so we figure that aspect is working properly.

To test it out I set the temperature to 150 and turned on the oven. The bottom element glowed red fairly quickly and within a couple of minutes the temperature reached 150, there was a click, the indicator light went out, and the lower burner cooled down. So far so good... Then I turned the temperature up to 450, waited a couple of minutes but the bottom burner never came back on. I turned the oven switch off and on and then the bottom burner started back up and was glowing red in no time.

There was once that even after turning the oven switch off and on the bottom burner did not seem to light back up.....that time I turned the temperature control to zero and then back to 450 before it came on......however that may be just a red herring as it only happened once during several tests.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.......

This sounds like it could be the oven control that is faulty.

Can you please verify your model number as I can not locate it in our database?

Thank you for the prompt response.
The model number is the one on the label affixed on the edge where the oven drawer closes against, except there is no dash between the GRSP and 3650SM-01

However there is further development. We tried out a timed delay start to see if anything different would happen. This time however the bottom burner did not come on....in fact the oven did not start up at all. We turned the oven switch off and on and then the top burner came on to start the preheat heat, but I was not able to get the bottom burner to come on at all. I tried everything.

I assume it would be more than likely to be the controller as oppose to the oven switch?

I did the stove out and took the back off to see what was up. I did manage to get a couple of part numbers GE 340D810P06 which seems to be replaced by WB21M248. That part is labelled as the GE RA Oven Control.

There is also ARS5177-203 replaced by WB22x5100 and labelled as the Selector Switch.

Does that help?

Thanks again....AWARD

Albeit the selector switch is cheaper, I now have one vote for the selector switch and one for the oven control. Is there a way I can be sure which one it is?

Check the contact in the control and the selector switch.

If you have a meter you can see where you lose your voltage.

Some controls have a plate that is held on with a spring wire clip.

With the range unplugged you can look inside the control and see if the contacts are bad.
