Unhappy Baking element burnt out, replaced, still wont go
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MER5755QAW
Age: 1 - 4 years

My baking element burnt out yesterday. I bought the replacement part and installed it, but the element will not heat. Also, the broil function will not work. I have power to the control pad, and the burner elements work. Any suggestions??

Hi,

Could you see that the element was burnt out?

I have seen a number of these maytag element just about blow up when they burn out. Many times they end up doing damage to the oven control/clock.

Do your burners on top work ok? Do they get red hot yet?
If your top burners no longer work you will want to check your house fuses.

If your top burners work ok then it's time to get a volt/ohm meter out and do some checking.

Default where to start?

Yes, the element was totally gone. As you said, it looked as though it blew up or somone took at cutting torch to it. The burners do get red hot. The control unit / clock is lit up. Where would I start with the meter? Would the oven sensor cause this? What would the normal meter / ohm reading be across this unit? I looked at the back of the contorl unit. I couldn't find a fuse, nothing obvious as far as burn out.

Thanks for any an all help!

Ok, if your top burners get red hot then you have 240 to the stove and don't have to worry about checking a the house fuses.

There is no fuse in the stove to check.

A bad oven sensor would not cause it not to heat.

I would start by checking for voltage at the bake element and trace it back to were you do not have voltage.

I would guess the bake element wires go back to the oven control/clock.

The clock may work, but there is a bake/broil relays on the back of that clock that controls the oven.

The oven clock/control is all one piece.

What is the model of the stove?

Edited to add, see the model number is MER5755QAW
Will see if I can find a wire diagram and take a look at what you got there.

I will get the meter out and proceed as you suggested. Where would I get a replacement contol unit if need be? Can individual components on the board be replaced?

Thanks

The people here at partselect.com should have a replacement control for you.
You can not get individual part, sorry.

Let me know what you find with the meter..

The problem is indeed the control unit. I took the unit out and inspected the circuit boards. There is a burn't area under what looks to be a small transformer. The solder actually melted away, and the entire area is hazed over. I will have to oder this part. You would think they could protect this unit a little better!

Thanks for all the help.
