I had the same issue with a Whirlpool microwave (GH5184XP). The first time it was covered under warranty after 9 months of purchase. The control board was replaced. The second time was after 3.5 years later. There was no way I was going to replace the control board because of the cost.
I decided to check for blown fuses inside the microwave. There are four fuses, one 20amp and three 4amp. Using an ohm meter, I checked the three 4amp fuses since they were solid and I could not see the filament. One of them was blown. I replaced the fuse and to my surprise it worked again.
It was easy to replace. Unplug the power, a single screw holds the front control panel on top. When unscrewed, slide up and the control panel pivots down. The 4amp fuses are located in plastic protectors right behind the control panel.
I'm certain it was only the fuse the first time when I had problems. After it was fixed, one of the dome lights under the unit was burned out. Didn't think any of it at the time. I noticed the samething happened the second time after I replaced the fuse The bulb was all black inside and the glass seperated from the metal when removed. I definetly think the bulbs are blowing the fuses. |
