HV Cap: case frame grounded or not? Brand: Frigidaire Age: Less than 1 year I recently purchased a microwave that had been damaged in shipping (cosmetic). It works fine, but I was hearing an electrical arcing sound when it ran. Things seemed to cook alright, so I wasn't sweating it too much.
I pulled off the top front trim cover and peered inside during operation (yes, I'm aware of the high voltage, and know how to handle myself), and noticed that the body of the HV Cap was arcing to the chasis (at the point of arcing they were only about 1/32" apart).
The cap itself is mounted in a plastic hanger, and it slides a bit. There's a metal bracket that it could fit into, connecting the body of the cap to frame ground. Since this micro was damaged in shipping, I'm guessing that the cap slid either out of the metal braket, or too close to it when the micro got dropped.
Looking at the schematics for the microwave, I can't tell if the cap body is supposed to be connected to chasis ground or not. Does anybody out there know? For the time being, I've slid the cap AWAY from the chasis to stop the arcing. The micro still seems to operate, but I'd like to know if I did the right thing.
Thanks in advance,
