Unhappy Glass Bowl Exploded in Micrwave
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 721.62349200
Age: 5 - 10 years

Okay, so I did something dumb with my microwave. A few days ago my 14 yr old son's friend put in a bag of microwave popcorn for too long and the microwave started to smoke. Today I wanted to give the microwave a good cleaning. So I took out the glass tray and put in a glass bowl filled with water, and floating in that, I put a small bowl of lemon juice. I turned it on for 20 minutes. Afterwards I wiped it around but it wasn't enough, so I turned it on for another 20 minutes and left it unattended. I don't know when it happened, but my son noticed the microwave was "popping". He turned it off and pulled out the plug. Apparently, both glass bowls had exploded. After a few minutes I opened the door. I saw that some of the glass pieces were resting on the interior plastic bottom, and the interiror plastic bottom had started to melt - now there is a 3" oval area that is black from the melted plastic on the interior bottom. The microwave was manufactured July 2002.
Is my microwave a goner?

I was given a micro yrs ago that had a hole in the bottom. Plastic tray was broken up pretty bad. I put in a nylon cutting board to cover the entire bottom, after sawing it to size, and a micro-proof glass tray on top. Worked fine for over a year before we got a new one. I am mearly saying whay I did and of course I was probably REAL Lucky that we had no problems, so if you want to try it, obviously it would be totally up to you. With the cost of most Micros down, I would today get a new one first before trying to fix one like I did yrs ago......
