I also have the exact same problem! I am annoyed that it is nearly $300 from GE just for the parts and what appears to be a nightmare to repair. Some help here would be so greatly appreciated... It doesn't look like the question was ever answered.

Advantium door handle update...

I ordered the handle
1 Microwave Door Handle - WB15X10082 @ $57.51 = $57.51

The replacement was not that difficult, around 20 mins.

1. Remove the two screws at the top of the black plastic vent on top of the unit.

2. Remove the vent.

3. Open the microwave door all the way and lift up and then lean the door towards the floor to get the botton hinge loose.

4. On the inside of the door, using a thin butter knife, I removed the greyish/black plastic trim by inserting the knife and pushing away from the door. I did break a few of the plastic retainers but this does not affect the fit when putting back together.

5. Remove all the screws around the metal backing holding the glass in place. Pry off the metal backing. This took a little effort.

6. You now have access to the two handle screws. I needed needle nose pliers to grab the broken plastic left by the old handle.

7. Screw in new handle, replace metal backing with screws, press plastic trim back into place. Place door on hinges and replace vent cover.

Done. Hope this helps.

Excellent how to, here are some added comments I'd post pictures if I thought they were needed, but I don't think they are for this repair procedure.
on step ...

4. On the inside of the door, using a thin butter knife, I removed the greyish/black plastic trim by inserting the knife and pushing away from the door. I did break a few of the plastic retainers but this does not affect the fit when putting back together.

I started at the bottom of the door, using a 2 inch plastic putty knife to remove the backing and it worked well.
Breaking off some of the plastic hold downs is inevitable. I think they (GE) want you to buy a new door and not just a handle ; ).

The backing reassembled just fine.

5. Remove all the screws around the metal backing holding the glass in place. Pry off the metal backing. This took a little effort.

Screws are easy, prying off the backing was the pain!!
I used 6-2 inch plastic putty knives to hold open the tabs then popped out the glass. You could probably break off these plastic hold downs and just screw it in and you be just fine. The previous genius that serviced this microwave didn't put any screws back in and broke off the screwed in attachment tabs from step 1.. If the plastic hold down tabs didn't work so well I'd be nervous by this, since this is a microwave.

I still might screw it back together this week anyway ; ).
