Default Arc City!
Brand: Hotpoint
Model Number: RVM1335BC
Age: 5 - 10 years

My wife (ok, I could have done it too) was warming some plates of food and in her haste failed to put one in and hit start. The microwave was on no more than 15 seconds when she realized what she had done. By that time, it was arcing like crazy and giving off a terrible chemical smell.

What happened was the drive coupler which connects to the turntable motor and supports the glass tray was arcing. Now if we try to use the microwave even with a large dish in there it still arcs and smells terribly, so of course, we're not using it at all.

I see a replacement coupler can be purchased and wondered if there is anything else that can be tried prior to that and what is the installation procedure? Will the old one just pry off the shaft?

Thanks

All microwave ovens will arc if there is any metal with an electrical gap in the oven cavity. Make sure the replacement part will make a good electrical connection.

Thanks for the response. What about the installation of the coupler? What's involved?
