Have the original microwave, built in, that came with the condo. Just stopped
heating. Is there a part I can replace or do I need to replace the micro.
It's a Tappan, manufactured Jan. 87. And is it hard to find the same size to
fit in the 'built in' space?

It is likely the transformer or the magnetron that has failed.

The microwave is twenty years old so other parts may fail.

Under your microwave model 56-2896-10-02 the parts for your microwave are no longer available so I guess you will have to replace it.
