Start with the obvious, make sure the power cord is getting power inside the mixer, you can't tell this by just looking at it, you have to test it with a voltage or ohm meter. 10 years old though, my best guess would be you probably need new motor brushes.
Very easy to replace, something that would have certainly worn out after 10 years of use. Whirlpool K45SS Parts List
Item #29, part number PS901315 (there are two, must replace both) in the Motor and Control parts breakdown there. You could test and see if your getting power to the brushes (2) easy enough, but they have to be due to be replaced by now no matter what so even if you ordered them and replaced and it didn't solve your problem, its the type of thing you needed to do anyhow. Beyond that then you just follow the power from the cord all the way to the motor with a meter to determine where you are getting power to but nothing out of.
Brushes are your most likely culprit though.
