Question Removing drive gear on kitchenaide trash compactor

I am replacing the worn plastic drive gear on my kitchenaide trash compactor. It appears to be held to the motor drive by a hollow pin that goes through the gear and the drive. Can't figure out how to get the pin out. Doesn't screw out. I'm afraid to give it a wallop with a hammer. Anyone know how to really get it out.

That's a rolled, tempered steel pin. They sell a punch set for those. You will never get it out without one. It might be the same size as the pins used to hold the old style GE washer motor clutch top in place.
