Default Kenmore Direct Drive Beltless Vacuum

My Kenmore vacuum still has suction, but the brushes don't turn. Since it doesn't have any belts we think there must be a broken gear. The mfg manual is no help at all, either to troubleshoot or to repair. Are we on the right track and is there a repair we can do?
