Default How many years???

How many years do you expect your appliances to last? Ever get that "they don't make 'em like they used to feeling?" I don't really expect my recent purchases to last 5 years. I missed my mom's GE ref, the one I grew-up with.

It must've been with us for 20 years before it finally went dead. My mom used to tell stories about me standing on a stool to reach the upper shelves.

For something like a GE, I'll say 10 years of service is normal. The better the quality is, the longer it will last. If you've noticed, a lot of appliances have plastic covers and components. We can't expect them to last, unlike the ones made of steel.

My parents bought a Maytag washing machine in 1986 that still works perfectly to this day, and it has been buffeted and abused and moved and banged and kid-played-on that whole time. It has only ever needed minimal repairs.

I, on the other hand, am 34 years old and have already been through four washing machines since I was 22. I suppose I could blame it on my own cheapness or simply the cheapness of manufacture of 'newer' washing machines; I can only hope that one day I'll inherit the Maytag.

My parents' appliances were around for well over 20 years. I mean the big gas stove was like 30 years and I still miss it. Whenever I go to the house now and see that little rinkydink new thing, it makes me cry.

And yes, now I feel old enough to say - "they don't make them like they used to"

Yes, we miss those old models which were loyal to us for years. With a mass production of goods and the close competition prevailing in the market, producers are forced to produce goods which are of low quality(the durability is just for 3-4 years nowadays.) so that they can sell their newly introduced products again and again.

My mom and dad bought a garbage compacter from Kenmoore (I think) and its older than me (28) not sure by how much though. Still works as good as I ever remember it working too. Its a totally ugly 70's yellowish brown.

Yep. My mom still had the olive green refrigerator and baby poop yellow washer and dryer until her boyfriend talked her into new when they bought a house last summer. I on the other hand am on my second washer and dryer set in less than 5 years, and I don't even want to talk about dishwashers. No, I don't think they make them like they used to at all.

Depends on the maker and the user. Most of my appliances are running at 15+ years and still going strong.

Of course now that I've posted that they will begin to fail...one by one....LOL

I am hoping mine will last for several years at any rate. That would be good enough.
