Question General appliance question

How much exposure to the elements can these appliances take before damage occurs?

--Deep freeze
--Washing machine
--Dryer

The reason I ask is that I have seen many, many folks with these appliances sitting out on carports and porches. Heck, I had a deep freeze on mine for a couple of years.

Also, I have a rearrangement idea in mind for my house now - I have an old, but solid, shed behind my house - it's watertight and well insulated, but has no climate control. Will my washer and dryer be okay if I put them out there?

I was wondering the same thing. Specifically for the stand alone freezer. I see so many on porches and wondered if they were actually in use. I wanted to put mine in the back area which is not insulated nor heated but I was worried when the temperature goes down to -30 and goes up to 90. Does the freezer have to work harder outside? Can the freezer itself take extreme temperatures?

As for the washer and dryer, I would be worried about storing them outside. Even though your shed is watertight, I would worry about moisture and the appliances getting rusty.

Also, what about animals? Are you sure the rodents and squirrels can't make nests in there. They are very crafty and might ruin your machines.

just my thoughts

I can answer about the washing machine. An old one of ours, permanently retired now, took 2 years to deteriorate (it was the plastic parts that chipped and broke first). It had just an overhang protecting it form the weather.

Thanks for the food for thought, sinamin.

I don't think my shed is any more damp than my kitchen; which is where the machines are currently. They are crammed together up against my water heater, too; and I don't think THAT arrangement is good for any of the poor metal thingies.

I hadn't thought about animals; but upon consideration I think that the risk is no higher out there than in the house for rodentia - my machines are in use almost daily. We have field mice in the house occasionally and I think the screaking dryer deters them from making nests. LOL.

Bet that arrangement doesn't do you any good too, taking up that much space in one of your favorite rooms. They'll be fine in the shed/shack. Check out the walls and floor first to plug any holes that might provide access to rodents. Besides, all that churning and grinding from the daily use of your machines will discourage any unwelcome visitors from permanently establishing a home.

That's precisely what I was thinking, wingnut.

Gosh, that setup so grates my nerves. Apologies to St. Pat, but the whole setup has been Irish-engineered. The water heater pipes are BENT at a 45 degree angle, sloping across a window and down behind the laundry machines.

Will we ever have a 'most annoying laundry setup' photo contest? I can say with some confidence, preemptively, that I WIN!

Unless a circuit board is exposed directly to weather, I think it would take a hell of a lot to put something down. There isnt really much to break from being wet or cold or even hot.

Its probably a lock washer your looking at. If you could post a pic I could tell you if it was made that way or if its broke. Ive never seen a washer crack before though.
