Here is a breakdown of your trash compactor model ZCG3100VBB-02.

Does the motor still run?

Maybe the chain came off.

The chain is on and motor runs. When I run the start cycle the motor runs and runs but the ram will not move up. I have to turn the switch to get it to stop.

Thanks for the reply.

You will have to remove the cabinet and see what has broken.

Hey Sheila,
Thanks for the reply.
What about the switch that controls the up and down of the ram?
I am trying to understand this whole thing.

I don't have the wiring diagram for your unit but the ram switch must be closed for the motor to run.

It may be the directional switch.

It should change the direction of the motor to send the ram back up.

If the motor works then the gears must be defective. Take rear cover off and inspect the chain and gears. The gears are usually a hard plastic so that they break before motor axle has a chance to get striped.
