Default Dryer - Gas to Electric conversion

Is it possible to convert a gas dryer to electric. My new wife brought a Maytag dryer with her and wants to use it but we do not have gas service at our new house. Where can I find the parts?

You can not convert a gas dryer to an electric dryer.

I never knew that. I only have electric appliances, but that is useful to know.

Yes you certainly can....I just completed a conversion on Tuesday Dec, 4 2007. It is possible. There are a few things to keep in mind; One: If you don't already have the parts, as in free parts, it will cost you more to convert than to buy new; Two: The parts must be from a similar model but the electric version, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Roper and Kirkland have very similar interchangeable parts as they are all made by Whirlpool Corp. This does not mean you can use any parts from any machine. You need all the parts from one model or newer part numbers. The biggest is the wiring harness. The old 120v gas one will not work with the new 240v electric; Three: Look for ducuments with wiring diagrams for both models, and I mean all. This will help to make sure you have everything in order and troubleshoot any problems; Four: No part is an unneccesary part. That switch on the motor, it has a special lever that can not be altered, otherwise the motor just hums. Trust me.

Now you might ask why I did this... two reasons, first, everyone said it couldn't be done. I always say, "I am sure it CAN" and I find a way to do it. Second, I had an electric dryer that the motor died, I checked for a replacement and found that the gas dryer I had in storage had the same motor. The motor on the gas one was newer so it needed a little modification for the switch. Why didn't I just use the motor and swap? Well the electric one was a large capacity, and the gas was an extra large. The gas also had a light inside, and all the doors and filter and handles were still like new. So I decided to "upgrade." I used the top controls from the electric with the wiring harness, the element and other key parts. They all fit perfectly once the gas parts were removed. Hooked it all up to find the switch on the motor was missing a little metal tab, so I took the original switch from the newer motor and put it back on, found a diagram that showed how the electric version would be hooked up and re-did the wiring. Now if the motor has to be replaced ever again, it is as simple as unplugging the harness and swapping it out.

So to answer all those questions: "Can I convert a gas dryer to an electric dryer?"

"YES YOU CAN"

Sure, why not? If you have the parts for the gas portion, burner, pipes, ignitor; wiring harness from gas unit (120v), timers switches, fuses, thermostats.,; you can most certainly convert it. If you don't have the parts, then you are putting more money into converting than a new one would cost. That is the biggest factor in the conversion. The other factor is that the parts are from similar machines, made by the same manufacturer.

The obvious choice, yea you can convert a water bed into a spring mattress if you have the parts, convert your car into a truck if you have the parts. Trying to do so would make no sense though. Is it remotely possible? Yes. Is it even marginally practical? Not at all.

Sell the gas dryer and buy an electric one.
