Bettyboop and greased brake shoes. I have to admit it is tempting to just grease the brake shoes if they are activating hard. Saves a lot of labor.
However, I curb my temptation and just change out the brake shoes.
There are six reasons for this; unknown reliability of this grease job, possible later failure and subsequent motor bearing failure, replacement of brake shoes makes the customer feel the job was done right, the old brake shoes are deteriorating and may increase motor current to burnout levels, you are doing an unauthorized repair that could open you to a lawsuit, greasing the brake shoes may mask other serious problems like dragging brake shoes
But certainly, it is an option for a customer to decide which way to go if they just want a cheap fix.
Another thing, you might not even know why the brake shoes are grabbing! It could be a rusted brake housing, but I have found most of the failures are from wearing brake shoe cam rollers, and this due to soft metal that constitutes a deteriating condition!!
Also one more negative for this is I really don't feel you can grease the brake shoes properly without pulling down the brake shoes; so...may as well replace brake shoes!!
A related situation: Have you ever driven a junk car when you where a tean and discover the iron wheel cylinders are leaking fluid. When you hit the brakes, the car swerves one way and when the oil burns off, you swerve another way!!
So... does anyone want to comment on this.
